Boston College Board of Regents Tours The Hatchery Makerspaces

Since The Hatchery’s inception in 2021, its facilities have seen some changes, from the addition of new tools and equipment to its major move from the basement of Higgins Hall to 245 Beacon St. Of the many tours Boston College’s Board of Regents has attended, this one was particularly special.

The tour, which took place on Friday, November 7th, provided an opportunity for board members to see how the makerspaces have evolved over the years, as many were actually present for the design and construction of 245 Beacon St. back in 2018.

The Hatchery’s co-managers, Lucas Ewing and Brian Reeves, spent time showcasing the resources available for users of the makerspaces, in addition to highlighting the cross-disciplinary possibilities that the spaces encourage. Also present on the tour was Professor John Gallaugher, who teaches a course in physical computing inside the makerspaces, as well as Professor Cathy Della Lucia, who hosts two sculpture classes offered by the Studio Art department.

Professor Gallaugher emphasized the importance of The Hatchery Makerspaces for his students, who do not have to worry about the cost of materials, such as circuit boards and LED lights that their physical computing projects might involve. Cathy Della Lucia took the time to discuss the value of free materials and the physical space that The Hatchery provides her students, who can be seen working on multidimensional, often large-scale projects through the glass walls of the makerspaces.

Behind the fancy new equipment and impressive projects that reside behind the glass walls, the makerspaces would not be what they are without their passionate staff and ever-curious makers. On behalf of the entire Hatchery staff, we thank the Board of Regents for taking the time to hear about and see firsthand the impact that our makerspaces have had on the BC community.
