Since its launch in 2021, The Hatchery Makerspaces have grown into a vibrant center of creativity, experimentation, and cross-disciplinary collaboration at Boston College. From expanded tools and equipment to its move from the basement of Higgins Hall to its purpose-built home at 245 Beacon Street, The Hatchery’s evolution reflects the University’s deep commitment to experiential learning and innovation.

On Friday, November 7, Boston College’s Board of Regents toured the space — a particularly meaningful visit for many members who were present during the design and construction of 245 Beacon St. in 2018. The return offered a powerful opportunity to see the vision realized: a dynamic environment where ideas take physical and digital form.

Hatchery co-managers Lucas Ewing and Brian Reeves guided Regents through the space, highlighting the resources available to students and the culture of interdisciplinary exploration fostered by the makerspaces. What began as an investment in infrastructure has matured into a thriving ecosystem of making, where engineering, business, the arts, and the sciences intersect.

Joining the tour were Professor John Gallaugher, who teaches physical computing in The Hatchery, and Professor Cathy Della Lucia of the Studio Art department, who holds sculpture courses in the space. Both spoke to the transformative impact of accessible materials, collaborative space, and hands-on experimentation. By removing cost barriers and providing room to create at scale, The Hatchery empowers students to take intellectual risks, iterate boldly, and bring ambitious ideas to life.

Behind the advanced equipment and striking student projects lies something even more powerful: a community driven by curiosity and possibility. The Hatchery has become more than a makerspace — it is a catalyst for innovation, a proving ground for ideas, and a visible expression of Boston College’s commitment to preparing students to lead in a world defined by complexity and change.

The visit from the Board of Regents celebrated not only how far The Hatchery has come, but the momentum it continues to build.
